INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- A former North Carolina state government
administrator and licensed Disciples minister has been called as the
next associate general minister and Church Finance Council president.
Lois Artis Murray, Wake Forest, N.C., begins the cabinet-level
assignment May 10. She was elected to the post by the Administrative
Committee, meeting here Jan. 31-Feb. 2. Besides heading the finance
council, Murray will be a senior executive in the Office of General
Minister and President.
Murray most recently served as assistant secretary for
administration with the North Carolina Department of Environmental
and Natural Resources in Raleigh. Since 1996, she and her husband,
the Rev. Samuel J. Murray, have been co-pastors of St. Andrews
Christian Church, Dudley, N.C.
In her role as assistant secretary, Lois Artis Murray was chief
financial officer for a state agency whose annual budget was more
than $2 billion. In addition, she supervised seven regional offices,
five administrative divisions and 16 program divisions. She also was
a senior member of N.C. Governor James B. Hunt, Jr.'s staff.
The certified public accountant also worked in higher education at
Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and
North Carolina A&T State University, also in Greensboro. She is a
former adjunct faculty member at North Carolina Wesleyan College.
The daughter of a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) pastor, she
has served in numerous capacities throughout the denomination's
regional and general expressions. She is currently a Steering
Committee member for the Process of Discernment on Racism. Murray is
a former member of the Common Global Ministries Board.
The new CFC president holds a bachelor's degree from the Catholic
University of America, Washington, D.C., and a master's of business
administration degree from the University of North Carolina,
Greensboro. She is currently a student at Duke University Divinity
School, Durham.
Her professional affiliations have included the (N.C.) Governor's
Minority Executive Council, North Carolina Women's Forum, American
Association of University Women and National Association of Black
Accountants. She also has been active in numerous local community
organizations. In 1993 and 1994, Gov. Hunt presented Murray North
Carolina's highest award for outstanding community service.
