The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is helping arrange
distribution of a container full of winter coats and sweaters to refugees
from Kosovo in Bosnia and Montenegro.
The 40-foot container, which arrived in Bosnia in mid-January, included
donations from Lutheran World Relief and items from the UMCOR Depot in
Baldwin, La., according to Lianna Vanoyan, an area development officer for
UMCOR's Nongovernmental Organization section.
As of Feb. 10, UMCOR staff in Bosnia was sorting items from the container
prior to distribution, she said.
The distribution will be handled by Save the Children in Montenegro and the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Bosnia. Both are based in
those areas.
Since fighting began nearly a year ago between ethnic Albanians and Serb-led
Yugoslavian forces, more than 2,000 people have been killed in Kosovo and
hundreds of thousands left homeless.
