    Panel to Examine Korean-American Cooperation

    by Evan Silverstein

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A subcommittee will be appointed to evaluate the work of
a group coordinating the Korean-American presbyteries, with findings to be
presented to the General Assembly this summer in Fort Worth, Texas.

    The action was approved Feb. 12 as part of the National Ministries
Division report to the General Assembly Council meeting here. The
three-member subcommittee will be appointed by the National Ministries
Division Committee (NMDC).

    No major study is planned, just minor housekeeping, said Roberto
"Beto" Delgado, who chairs the NMDC. He said the subcommittee will be
formed to review the progress of the Coordinating Committee for the
Korean-American Presbyteries (CCKAP).

    "Built into a lot of our stuff," he said, "is accountability."

    The CCKAP was formed in response to an overture submitted in 1997 by
the Presbytery of Hanmi to the 209th General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.). The group's purpose is to conduct conferences and
networking among Korean-American presbyteries.

    As of last March 23, there were four formally organized Korean-American
presbyteries - one each in the Synod of Southern California, the Synod of
Lincoln Trails, the Synod of the Northeast and the Synod of the
Mid-Atlantic.

    Two additional Korean-American Presbyteries are now organizing, one in
the Synod of the Pacific and the other in the Synod of Alaska-Northwest.

    The subcommittee will "probably (be) looking at their minutes, at their
reports and whatever else that committee needs to do" to make sure the
CCKAP is making progress. Delgado said. "These people are just there as a
mechanism of accountability."

    The CCKAP is committed to building 200 new Korean Presbyterian churches
in the next 10 years through church development and redevelopment programs,
according to the National Ministries Division report.

    In addition, the CCKAP is planning to:

     * Encourage each presbytery to generate at least five proposals for
new-church development and redevelopment project funding from the
Evangelism and Church Development office through the Mission Development
Resources committee every year for the next 10 years;
     * Coordinate special seminars and workshops on the application process
for church loans, grants and matching funds;
     * Encourage the presbyteries to maximize spiritual gifts and
evangelistic fervor for the renewal of local churches;
     * Promote an agreement on union between the presbyteries of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Korean Presbyterian Church in America.
