William E. Rice, 67, an important leader in Presbyterian global mission
for more than 35 years, died March 3 in Atlanta.
Rice embarked on his missionary career in 1963 when he and his wife,
Elizabeth, were appointed as missionaries to Taiwan by the former
Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS). He served as a business
manager and hospital administrator in Taiwan until 1973, when he was
appointed director of the Program Section of the PCUS' Division of
International Mission, based in Atlanta.
According to General Assembly stated clerk the Rev. Clifton
Kirkpatrick, Rice "was the spark plug that got our mission efforts in Haiti
and Bangladesh started and established on a firm footing.
Rice stayed in Atlanta after Presbyterian reunion in 1983 and served
until his retirement two years ago as business administrator for Atlanta's
First Presbyterian Church. A memorial service for Bill Rice will be held
in that church on March 14.
