United Methodism's historic role in higher education will be explored at the
church's Fourth Historical Convocation this summer.

The Rev. Richard P. Heitzenrater will speak on the vision of Methodism
founder John Wesley at the convocation, June 25-28, on the campus of United
Methodist-related Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. Heitzenrater is the
William K. Quick professor of Wesley and Methodist studies at Duke
University Divinity School. He also is general editor of the new edition of
the Works of John Wesley and one of the foremost interpreters of Wesley's
life and theology.

The Rev. Roger W. Ireson, head staff member of the denomination's Board of
Higher Education and Ministry, will deliver the keynote address on the
convocation's theme, "Knowledge and Vital Piety."

Other presentations will focus on current history projects, including the
Memoir Indexing and Survey of Annual Conference Archives, and the Lilly
Foundation Study on United Methodism and American Culture.

The churchwide Commission of Archives and History, meeting nearby before the
convocation, will present its distinguished service award. Other awards will
be given by the Historical Society of the United Methodist Church, which is
holding its annual meeting on campus in conjunction with the convocation.

The convocation is open to all who are interested. For more information,
contact the convocation coordinator, the Rev. Arthur Swarthout, P. O. Box
268, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745; telephone: (828) 452-2689.
