Presbyterian Communicators Win Prestigious Awards
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Led by "Presbyterians Today" with six awards,
Presbyterian communicators were highly honored on March 18 as the Religion
Communicators Council presented its 1998 DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards at a
ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Other Presbyterian award recipients included the Mission Interpretation
and Promotion Team of the Congregational Ministries Division, "HORIZONS"
magazine, the Media Services Team of the Office of Communication, Linda
Post Bushkofsky of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies and the Nashville-based
Presbyterian Appalachian Broadcasting Council.
"Presbyterians Today," edited by Eva G. Stimson, dominated the "graphic
design, art and photography" category. The magazine's October 1998 cover
received an Award of Excellence (first place) for "illustration,
publication cover."
The magazine also received an Award of Excellence for "photography,
black and white," both for a single photo and a series - both awards for
"People, Places, Relationships: The Year with Latin Americans." The Year
with Latin Americans photo gallery also received a "Best of Class" (grand
prize) award, one of only eight such awards handed out this year.
The magazine received another Award of Excellence for "photography,
color, single photo," for the photo accompanying the article "Wonder-Full
Worship." Finally, an Award of Merit (second place) was received by Stimson
and the magazine in the category "writing for periodicals, magazine
article, series," for the series "Transforming Hearts and Minds."
Sandra Sorem and Stevie Finn of the Mission Interpretation and
Promotion Team received an Award of Merit in "other print media, special
print materials" for the 1998 Christmas Joy Offering packet.
"HORIZONS" magazine received an Award of Excellence in "writing for
periodicals, book" for "Resistance and Restoration: The Message of the
Prophet Jeremiah," the 1998 HORIZONS Bible study.
Media Services received an Award of Merit in "non-broadcast
audio/video, promotional/informational" for the video "Surprising Grace:
People, Disabilities, Churches." The video was produced by Bill Gee.
Linda Post Bushkofsky, associate synod executive for communication and
interpretation for the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, received two awards: an
Award of Excellence in the "other print media, brochures" category for a
collection of 16 brochures (one for each presbytery in the synod) produced
for congregational use; and an Award of Merit in "graphic design, overall
publication" for a brochure for a synod-sponsored racial justice event
called "Seeing with New Eyes of Justice."
Christy Wolfe-Mazeres of the Presbyterian Appalachian Broadcasting
Council received an Award of Merit in "public relations/advertising, radio"
for "Take Time." She also received a Shoestring Award for the same piece,
for having gotten "a lot of bang for a few bucks."
The Religious Communicators Council is a 500+-member organization
dedicated to improving the quality of religious communication in North
America.
