News in brief
... Archbishop emeritus of Finland Martti Simojoki passes away. Emeritus
archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, Martti Simojoki
passed away in Helsinki on 25 April 1999 aged 90 years. A vice-president of
the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) from 1963 to 1970, one of his major
ecumenical inputs was the opening of dialogue between the Lutheran church
in Finland and the Russian Orthodox Church in the early 70s. Current
archbishop Jukka Paarma described the late Simojoki "as a spiritual leader
a head taller than the others, and one of the most significant church
leaders not only in Finland but also in the whole of Europe." In the
Finnish church, he worked as bishop in three dioceses for more than 25
years and as archbishop of Turku and Finland from 1964 to 1978.
