FCC CHAIRMAN TO MEET WITH RELIGIOUS & MINORITY GROUPS
THAT SUPPORT LOW-POWER, COMMUNITY RADIO
Open Meeting will be 2:30 P.M. Thursday, May 13, Washington, D.C.

58NCC5/11/99

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 11 -- Federal Communications Commission
Chairman William Kennard will meet with a delegation of local and
national religious and minority group representatives who support
low-power community radio as an effective tool for building
better neighborhoods.

The meeting is to be convened by the Rev. Joan Brown Campbell,
general secretary of the National Council of Churches, and will
be held Thursday, May 13, at 2:30 p.m. at First Congregational
United Church of Christ, 945 G Street, NW, Washington (202) 628-
4317.

This is the first meeting that brings a diverse group of
people from across the country together in support of community
radio. Such racial/ethnic and religious groups see low-power
radio as the last opportunity to give voice to the voiceless,
because all other forms of mass media are either unavailable or
too expensive.

The church views this as a justice issue and is glad to lend
its support. Speaking will be representatives from Catholic and
Protestant groups, Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics
and Indians of Asian descent.

This is an open meeting. We invite your coverage. For more
information, please contact Carol J. Fouke, media relations
officer for the National Council of Churches (212) 870-2227; e-
mail: news@ncccusa.org, or William C. Winslow, press officer for
the United Church of Christ (212) 870-2137, e-mail:
winsloww@ucc.org.
