INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- The senior minister of the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)'s
"national cathedral" in Washington, D.C., will
preach during closing night of the Oct. 8-12
General Assembly in Cincinnati.

The Rev. Alvin O. Jackson, pastor of National
City Christian Church, will address more than
8,000 persons, Oct. 12, gathering under the
assembly theme, "The Journey Now." He is serving
as alternate to the Rev. Andrew Young who
canceled his General Assembly preaching
engagement.

Jackson was installed as pastor of the historic
Washington, D.C., church in October 1998, after a
successful 18-year ministry at Mississippi
Boulevard Christian Church, Memphis, Tenn. Under
his leadership, the African American congregation
grew from 340 members to more than 8,000, making
it the largest in the Disciples of Christ.

The nearly 500-member National City Christian
Church, was established in 1926 and was the
spiritual home of U.S. Presidents James Garfield
and Lyndon Johnson.
