A consultation on "The Authority of Scripture and the Nature of Revelation"
is planned Dec. 7-9 at the Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville.

The United Methodist Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious
Concerns and the churchwide Board of Discipleship are sponsoring the event.

Participation will be by invitation only, but observers are welcome. "We
want to make it open to anyone who has an interest in coming," said Betty
Gamble, a staff executive with the Commission on Christian Unity and
Interreligious Concerns.

The December meeting is an outgrowth of a two-part dialogue on theological
diversity sponsored by the commission in November 1997 and February 1998,
but it is not directly connected to that consultation. "The other dialogue
identified the need to study this," Gamble explained.

About 30 people with a background in United Methodist Wesleyan theology will
discuss the denominational understanding of the authority of Scripture and
God's revelation to the church and the world. Goals include determining
areas of common ground regarding the issue of scriptural authority;
identifying resources to help the denomination grapple with the issue; and
beginning to develop a resource for further study throughout the United
Methodist connection.

For more information about the consultation, call the commission office at
(212) 870-3800.
