Adventists Lead March to Protest Health Dangers of
Cigarettes

Florianopolis, Brazil. Brazilian Seventh-day Adventists
led a community march through the city of Florianopolis
on May 29 to protest the health dangers of cigarettes.
Through acted stories, loudspeakers and pamphlets the
marchers highlighted the problems associated with
smoking in commemoration of the World Heath
Organization's World Anti-Tobacco Day.

With over 100,000 dying from smoking-associated
diseases in Brazil alone, the marchers, who included
schoolchildren, invited smokers to attend a course on how
to quit.

The event concluded with a music concert together with
presentations by ex-smokers on their experiences.
The march was organized by the health department of
the Florianopolis Adventist Church in conjunction
with the "Walk Around the World 2000" program that seeks
to promote the importance of a drug-free lifestyle.
