Ugandan Government Praises ADRA For Prompt Relief
Assistance
Kampala, Uganda. Wadri Kassiano, a Principal Rehabilitation
Officer, represented the Ugandan government in a recent
ceremony commending the Adventist Development and
Relief Agency (ADRA) for their timely assistance of 20
destitutes who were recently taken from Gulu to Kampala by
Major Kakooza Mutale, the Presidential Advisor on Political
Affairs. Major Mutale feared the destitutes might be killed by
a rebel collaborator who recently killed their relatives.
After being brought the 372 miles (600 kilometers) to
Kampala, the 17 children, two breast-feeding mothers and
one school-aged boy were taken to the Human Rights
Commission Offices and later handed over to the Naguru
Reception Center and Remand Home.
After being approached by the Ministry of Gender, Labour
and Social Development about the plight of the people, Dr.
Solomon Wakabi, ADRA Uganda programs director, and
Booker Ajuoga, ADRA Uganda public relations officer,
donated and delivered relief items to the victims, including
emergency household items and foodstuffs such as beans,
maize meal, sugar, salt, cooking oil, basins and utensils.
On the same day, ADRA Uganda officers provided food
assistance to 40 street children under the care of the Rubaga
Youth Development Association Vocational Skills Training
Center in Kampala. This followed the center's administrative
request through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social
Development for emergency food relief due to acute food
shortage.
Another recent relief operation by ADRA Uganda includes the
distribution of five bales of clothing and blankets to Luzira
prisoners. ADRA Uganda is a member of National Disaster
Preparedness team in Uganda, recognized for providing relief
to survivors of natural and manmade disasters.
ADRA, formed in 1956, is an independent, humanitarian
agency established with the specific purpose of individual
and community development and disaster relief. As an
international nongovernmental organization (NGO), ADRA
helps people without regard to age, ethnicity, or political or
religious association. Additional information about ADRA can
be found on its web page at www.adra.org.
