Sunday worship is anything but boring
by Meghan Davis
PROVIDENCE, RI - July 5 1999 - I know that many young people think of
church as
conservative, oldfashioned and boring. But the service this morning, Sunday,
June 4, was far from boring.
Long, yes, but never boring. The Sunday morning worship service was
full of lively, beautiful songs and eloquent prayers.
My favorite part of the service was the lively sermon by the Rev. Dr.
Prathia Hall. She related the story of Esther to today’s world magnificently.
Her dynamic voice helped to get her point across wonderfully. She encouraged us
to be active in making the world a better place.
“Silence in the face of genocide is suicide,” she said.
An admirable effort was made to add diversity to the service. A hymn
from Nigeria and a hymn from the Caribbean were sung, as was a hymn in Spanish
and English. I enjoyed these hymns because I, as well as most of the
congregation, had never heard them before.
I hope that this service has changed the minds of youth who avoid
church, thinking it is insipid and dull. Let’s keep General Synod this
interesting and spirited for years to come!
