PROVIDENCE, RI - July 6 1999 -

        We polled folks at the Providence Convention Center with the question,
“You know you've been at General Synod too long when ...”
        —  You stand impatiently waiting for the elevator and suddenly realize
you have not pushed the button.
         -- The youth are jitter-bugging to Rock Around The Clock.
        --  You no longer know what day of the week it is, or what time of day
it is.
        --  You go to pack up your cross-stitching and find you have sewn it to
your dress.
        --  You are on your third round through the limited hotel lunch menu.
        --  You begin to understand the gobbledegook spewing forth from the
plenary sound system.
        --  You never want to see another chocolate-chip cookie again.
        --  Your husband tells you your favorite baseball team won last night
and you wonder what resolution he's talking about.
        --  The paunchy old men begin to look like Tom Cruise, and the dowdy
matrons like Julia Roberts.
        --  Every time you sit down you dose off.
        — The bubble blowing and balloon tossing by delegates in plenary no
longer seems childish.
        — You aren’t surprised to see a conga line roam through the plenary
hall
        — When the site of 2,000 cookies in one place doesn’t seem odd anymore.
