BLOOMQUIST BEGINS LUTHERAN WORLD FEDERATION ASSIGNMENT

     CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Karen L. Bloomquist, director for
studies in the Division for Church in Society of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), begins a one-year assignment on Aug.
1 as study secretary for church and society issues in the Department for
Theology and Studies of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), Geneva,
Switzerland.
     Bloomquist is taking sabbatical leave from her duties with the
ELCA and as part-time associate professor of theological ethics at
Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.
     A graduate of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minn., and Pacific
Lutheran Theological Seminary, Berkeley, Calif., Bloomquist earned her
doctorate at Union Theological Seminary, New York.
     Bloomquist, 51, has been pastor of Faith American Lutheran Church,
Oakland, Calif., and the Lutheran Church of St. Philip, Brooklyn, N.Y.
She served as assistant professor of church and society and a visiting
lecturer at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago.
     Among other responsibilities, the ELCA Division for Church in
Society assists the church in considering moral issues, prepares social
statements and messages, and develops education and program resources on
social issues.
     The LWF is a global communion of Lutheran churches.  Founded in
1947, the LWF now has 128 member churches in 70 countries representing
more than 57 million of the world's 61 million Lutherans.  LWF central
offices are in Geneva, Switzerland.
