PC(USA) Publications Win
Numerous Press Association Awards
by Jerry L. Van Marter
PORTLAND, Ore.-Led by "Presbyterians Today" magazine with five honors,
Presbyterian publications won a number of prestigious awards at the annual
competition of the Associated Church Press here April 20.
The Presbyterian News Service and "HORIZONS" each won four awards,
"Church and Society" magazine won three, and "Presbyterian Life and
Times," the newsletter of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, won one.
The Associated Church Press, now in its 83rd year, includes more than
220 religious periodicals throughout the United States and Canada. The
awards competition this year drew almost 1,000 entries.
Three Presbyterian publications received plaques in the "Best of Class"
category: "Presbyterian Life and Times," second in the newsletter
competition; the Presbyterian News Service, second in the news service
competition; and "Church and Society," third in the special interest
magazine competition.
Perhaps the most popular award in the entire competition was a first
place certificate to Eva Stimson, editor of "Presbyterians Today," for her
March 1998 interview of the Rev. Fred Rogers of "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood"
fame. Stimson was wildly applauded at the awards banquet when Rogers' face
from the magazine's cover was flashed on the screen as her first place
prize was announced in the "interview" category.
"Presbyterians Today" also won a first place certificate in the
"convention or meeting coverage" category for magazines for Stimson's
coverage of the 1998 General Assembly. Jerry Van Marter won a second place
prize in the "convention or meeting coverage" category for news services
for the 1998 "Assembly in Brief."
"Presbyterians Today" won a first place certificate in the "letters to
the editor" category for the April 1998 letters column edited by managing
editor Catherine Cottingham; a second place certificate in the "magazine
photography" category for Nancy Anne Dawe's photograph illustrating
"Children of Divorce" in the December 1998 issue; and a third place
certificate in the "theological reflection" category for Susan Nelson's
"The Freeing Grace of Forgiveness" in the March 1998 issue.
The two other awards won by the Presbyterian News Service went to Evan
Silverstein, a second place certificate in the "news story" category for
his Dec. 18, 1998 story in "NEWS BRIEFS" entitled "Presbyterians Cross Line
to Protest Against Army's School of the Americas"; and a third place
certificate in the "feature story" category to Alexa Smith for her Nov. 6,
1998 story in "NEWS BRIEFS" entitled "Brazilian Presbyterians Seek to Help
Children with AIDS."
"HORIZONS" four awards included a first place certificate in the "Bible
study" category for the 1998 HORIZONS Bible study, "Resistance and
Restoration: The Message of the Prophet Jeremiah," by Alice Ogden Bellis; a
first place certificate in the "department" category for magazines for
Charlotte Johnstone's recurring column, "Dispatch from Forbearance
Presbyterian Church"; a second place certificate in the "humor: written"
category for "The Education of Geneva" by Charlotte Johnstone in the
September-October 1998 issue; and a third place certificate in the
"biblical interpretation" category for Janice Catron's "Like Mighty
Waters."
In addition to its Best in Class award, "Church and Society," edited by
Kathy Lancaster, won a second place certificate in the "professional
resource" category for "A Strategy of Shamelessness' by Virstan Choy in the
July 1998 issue; and a third place certificate in the "topic of the year:
violence" category for "Horror and Hope" by actor/social activist Mike
Farrell in the September-October 1998 issue.
