Assembly Refers "Theology of Stewardship" Paper,
Urges Recycling
FORT WORTH-The Assembly today voted to refer "Trust, Worship and Serve: A
Statement of Stewardship Theology" to the General Assembly Council for
further work. The document, which is intended to guide stewardship work
throughout the church, was referred "so that it may be refined to be more
usable in the local church."
The Assembly asked that the paper be refined in four areas. The
Assembly wants the purpose clarified, as well as "how [the paper] is to be
used as a foundational statement for development of stewardship resources
for the church." The Assembly further would like the document to "include
a stronger dominant theological motivation." It also said the paper "needs
clear, obvious biblical references in the body of the document." Finally,
they want it to be "clear and concise."
The Assembly also directed that recycling for aluminum cans, glass
bottles and newspapers be available at the next General Assembly in Long
Beach, Calif. The Assembly already recycles other paper products.
The Assembly also adopted new "deliverances" to enable the the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Foundation to create three subsidiary
corporations. The three are: New Covenant Trust Co., NA; New Covenant
Annuity Insurance; and New Covenant Funds. A "deliverance" is the "second
highest act a General Assembly can take short of amending the "Book of
Order", Mark Martin, Iowa City, Iowa, told commissioners. Martin moderated
the Assembly Committee on Stewardship and Funding. The 210th General
Assembly first adopted "deliverances" creating these entities, but banking
authorities balked at details in these agreements, requiring action from
this Assembly.
