Bell-Mackay Award Presented at PFR Breakfast
Fort Worth-The Presbyterians for Renewal (PFR) held their annual General
Assembly breakfast on Wednesday morning. After a welcome by PFR president
Tamara Letts, the Rev. Sue Babovec, 1988 recipient of the Linda Fund and
Linda Fund Coordinator, presented the 1999 Linda Award to Jennifer Oraker
of First Presbyterian Church, Colorado Springs, Colo. She is continuing
her studies at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, Calif. It was also given to
Martha [Mindy] Huffstetler of Myers Park Presbyterian Church [U.S.A.] of
Charlotte, N.C. She is beginning her studies at Princeton Theological
Seminary. This award provides an opportunity for the recipients to
participate in the General Assembly during their preparation for ministry.
The Bell-Mackay Award was introduced by the Rev. Marian McClure and
presented by the Rev. Harry Greene to Ralph D. and Roberta H. Winter. They
were recognized for their work as missionaries in Guatemala from 1956 to
1966, teaching in the World Mission School of Fuller Theological Seminary
from 1966-1976, and founding the U. S. Center for World Missions.
The program concluded with a stirring sermon, "The Lamb and Lion
Renewal," based on Isaiah 11:1-9 and given by Dr. Crag Barnes of the
National Presbyterian Church, Washington, D. C. Calling the listeners to
determine whether they choose to be victims or wolves, he claimed that both
exist within each individual. For the speaker the wolf represents
assertiveness and the lamb vulnerability. Barnes explained that the gift
of the faith enables Christians to maintain a delicate balance between the
two. He concluded that the world was seeking such knowledge and balance. He
challenged the people there to share this gift.
