Theology Conferences Will Study the Nicene Creed
by Jerry Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-We are at a time in the life of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) and American culture when conversations about God and spirituality
abound.
Believing it is important that Presbyterians understand what the church
means when it talks about Holy Spirit and spirituality, the Office of
Theology and Worship in the Congregational Ministries Division of the
PC(USA) has planned twin convocations entitled "We Believe in the Holy
Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life," Oct. 20-23 in Charlotte and Oct.
25-28 in San Francisco.
Convocation participants will consider the third article of the "Nicene
Creed":
"We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and Son is
worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe
in one holy, catholic, apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for
the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the
life of the world to come."
Plenary speakers for both convocations are Colin Gunton, professor of
systematic theology at Kings College in London; the Rev. Cynthia Campbell,
president of McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago; Leanne Van Dyke,
professor of systematic theology at Western Theological Seminary in
Holland, Mich.; and Miroslav Volf, professor of theology at Yale Divinity
School.
Lectures will be presented by Elizabeth Nordquist, assistant professor
of spirituality at San Francisco Theological Seminary; Stacy Johnson,
associate professor of theology at Princeton Theological Seminary; Ellen
Charry, associate professor of theology at Princeton Seminary; and Willie
James Jennings, associate dean at Duke Divinity School.
Preachers in Charlotte will be the Rev. Portia Turner Williamson,
professor of New Testament at Shaw Divinity School and pastor of St. John's
Presbyterian Church in Durham, N.C.; and the Rev. Craig Barnes, pastor of
The National Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C.
Preachers in San Francisco will be the Rev. Linda Loving, pastor of
First Presbyterian Church in Oakland, Calif., and the Rev. Earl Palmer,
pastor of University Presbyterian Church in Seattle.
