STATEMENT FROM THE SECRETARY GENERAL REGARDING ARCHBISHOP TAY
Archbishop Moses Tay is on the Standing Committee of the Primates Meeting,
along with 4 other primates from among the 38.
His invitation to be at the ACC meeting in Scotland stems from the fact that
the Primates Standing Committee members are invited to attend ACC meetings.
He is not a member of the Anglican Consultative Council itself.
We have seen a letter addressed to Dr Carey signifying that Dr Tay felt
Scotland was "one of the most heretical provinces" and that he would not
attend. Dr Tay did not inform us directly.
The whole purpose of an ACC meeting is to have at hand, at great effort and
expense, people from the whole Communion to share in the process of
deliberation and decision making. The Primates who attend have no vote but
their voice in hearings and debates has always been welcome. This particular
meeting is significant as it addresses items from the Lambeth Conference
1998 that have been referred to it by the Primates and the Lambeth
Conference 1998.
