    Presbyterian Schools Rate High in College Guide 
 
    Three Colleges Among the National Top 40

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Three Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)-related colleges - 
Davidson, Macalester and Lafayette have been ranked among the nation's top 
40 liberal arts colleges, according to the "U.S. News and World Report" 
1999-2000 "America's Best Colleges" guide. 
 
    In addition, among regional universities and liberal arts colleges, 
Trinity University in San Antonio was named best university in the West, 
Lyon College in Batesville, Ark., was named second best liberal arts 
college in the South and Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell was named 
best liberal arts college in the West. 
 
    The guide, published annually, analyzes each college and university in 
the country according to 16 indicators of academic excellence and then 
compares the schools to others with similar missions in similar regions. 
 
    Also appearing in the top tier of rankings in their categories were 
Beaver College in Glenside, Pa., Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash., and 
Westminster College of Salt Lake City (best regional colleges). 
 
    And a number of PC(USA) schools ranked high as best regional liberal 
arts colleges, including Grove City (Pa.) College; Mary Baldwin College in 
Staunton, Va.; Maryville (Tenn.) College; King College in Bristol, Tenn.; 
Davis and Elkins (W.Va.) College; Warren Wilson College in Asheville, N.C.; 
Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis.; the College of the Ozarks in Pt. 
Lookout, Mo.; Millikin University in Decatur, Ill.; Buena Vista College in 
Storm Lake, Iowa; and the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Ark. 
 
    Presbyterian-related schools were also highly-ranked for such factors 
as affordability and diversity.  Among the PC(USA)-related schools 
recognized either as "best values" or for their graduates minimum debt load 
were St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C.; Hanover (Ind.) 
College; Trinity University; Westminster College of Salt Lake City; 
Whitworth College, Grove City College, Bloomfield (N.J.) College; Maryville 
College, King College, Carroll College, the College of the Ozarks, Buena 
Vista University and Albertson College of Idaho. 
 
    Agnes Scott College of Decatur, Ga., Bloomfield College, Missouri 
Valley College of Marshall, Mo., and Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss., 
were recognized for their campus diversity. Macalester College, the College 
of Wooster (Ohio), Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., Lake Forest 
(Ill.) College and the University of Tulsa (Okla.) were named among the top 
international colleges or universities in the U.S. 
 
    Eckerd College was also recognized for its innovations in campus 
housing.
