Chicago -- As a prelude to the Parliament of World Religions, the
sounds of diverse devotions will echo through the sanctuary of Christ
Church Cathedral in Vancouver on Sunday, Sept. 26. The celebration is
sponsored by the local Multi-Faith Leaders Fellowship and the Council for a
Parliament of the World's Religions (CPWR).
Chants by Buddhists and Jains, the recital of Quranic verses and
Hindu Bhajan, Chinese music, and the singing of Sikh, Buddhist, and
Christian choirs will follow a presentation on the 1999 Parliament to be
held Dec. 1-8, in Cape Town, South Africa.
Preminder Nath Jain, CPWR Trustee and International Ambassador, will paint
a verbal picture of the complex event at which more than 6,000 religious
leaders, scholars, activists, youth and interested laity are expected.
In Cape Town, there will be some 600 seminars, workshops, and
lectures - more than 15 by Canadians. Canadians have also proposed Gifts
of Service to the World. Gifts are examples of sustainable projects to
improve the quality of life in the new millennium. Accepted gifts will be
published in a book to be distributed at the Parliament and will also be
presented at workshops or honored at plenary sessions.
The Parliament's working document, "A Call to Our Guiding
Institutions," invites the institutions of religion, government, commerce,
education, media, science, and others, to reassess and redefine their roles
in seeking "a just, peaceful and sustainable future."
First Nations Cree Elder, Lucille Isbister, will give the
invocation for the 3 - 6:30 p.m. Vancouver service. As hosts, Dean Peter
Elliot, Christ Church Cathedral (Anglican) and the Rev. Dr. Gordon Turner,
St. Andrews-Wesley Church (UCC) will welcome participants.
