American Baptist Event to Address Violence

A national consultation addressing the opportunities
for redemption in the context of violence will be held Oct.
27-30 at the Wyndham Marriott Hotel, Westborough, Mass.
Sponsored by National Ministries, American Baptist
Churches USA, all sessions of "Grounded in Hope: Discerning
God's Presence Amid Conflict and Violence" are open to the
public. Pre-registration is requested.
"Violence has spread all across our nation--into
public schools, churches, workplaces, neighborhoods," said
the Rev. Hector Cortez, associate executive director for
Biblical Justice, National Ministries. "We invite you to
join us at this event to be part of a Christian response."
The event will begin with a banquet on Oct. 27
featuring Dr. George Cummings, pastor of Imani Community
Church in Oakland, Calif., and professor of systematic
theology at the American Baptist Seminary of the West in
Berkeley. Other leaders include the Rev. Daniel Buttry, co-
pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dearborn, Mich.; the
Rev. Timothy Tseng, assistant professor of American
religious history at The Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y.;
the Rev. James West, president/CEO of Futures for Children
in Albuquerque, N.M.; the Rev. Bruce Wall, co-pastor of
Boston's Dorchester Temple Baptist Church and
founder/director of Bruce Wall Ministries; the Rev. Kirk
Jones, pastor of First Baptist Church in Randolph, Mass.;
and Carolyn Schrock-Shenk, director of Mennonite
Conciliation Service, a program of the Mennonite Central
Committee.
Participants will have a unique opportunity to learn
firsthand how one church has addressed violence in a special
session at Dorchester Temple Baptist Church in Boston. Co-
pastors Bruce Wall and Craig McMullen have been instrumental
there in organizing grassroots efforts to bring about the
"Boston Miracle."
Major presentations of the event will be translated
into Spanish and Portuguese.
 To pre-register call 800-222-3872, ext. 2394. Daily
registration is $15 plus the cost of any meals provided on
site. Registration for the full consultation is $80
(includes five meals).
