American Baptists Aid in Taiwan Relief

American Baptist Churches USA World Relief Officer
Charles Sydnor today released $10,000 in emergency funds to
Church World Service to aid in humanitarian efforts in
Taiwan following last week's earthquake there.
The quake, which registered 7.6 on the Richter Scale,
already has claimed more than 2,100 lives, and several
thousand more people remain trapped in rubble or unaccounted
for. Nearly 8,000 were injured, and a number of aftershocks
have contributed to the widespread damage. Six million
houses were reported without electricity late last week.
Church World Service, the humanitarian agency of the
National Council of Churches of Christ, is working with the
Presbyterian Church of Taiwan as it supports volunteer
relief workers and coordinates medical efforts of area
hospitals.
American Baptists wishing to help in emergency relief
work in Taiwan can do so through One Great Hour of Sharing
(Monthly Report of Mission Support, line 7), designating
funds for "Taiwan Earthquake Relief."
