Sara Lisherness is Tapped to Head Peacemaking Program
Longtime Associate is Promoted to Top Job
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Sara Pottschmidt Lisherness, an associate with the
Presbyterian Peacemaking Program (PPP) since 1992, has been named
coordinator of program, effective Oct. 4.
Lisherness succeeds Gary Payton, who resigned as coordinator earlier
this year to accompany his wife to Idaho, where she accepted a pastorate.
Lisherness, who came to Louisville from Southern California, has been
associate for governing body support in the Peacemaking Program, assisting
congregations, presbyteries and synods as they engage in peacemaking
ministries.
According to the Rev. Ed Craxton, associate director for the
Congregational Ministries Division's Christian Education Program Area -
where the PPP is lodged - said the search committee "was impressed by
Sara's gifts, her thorough, in-depth knowledge of the program, her
commitment to working in partnership, her understanding of both the
national and global issues of peacemaking as well as the spiritual
dimensions, her vision for the future, and the self awareness of her
personal growth and potential for future growth."
Lisherness has edited many of the resources published by the
Peacemaking Program, including "Seeking to Be Faithful Together: Guidelines
for Presbyterians During Times of Disagreement" and "Proclaiming the Good
News of God's Peace," an annually produced peacemaking Advent devotional
booklet. She was co-producer of the video "Cherishing God's Creation" and
co-edited "Striking Terror No More: The Church Responds to Domestic
Violence." She has been the content editor for two issues of "Church &
Society" magazine: "Violence: Roots, Realities, Redemption" published in
1995 and "Hate" published in 1999.
Lisherness is a graduate of Miami University in Ohio and attended San
Francisco Theological Seminary in Southern California. A Presbyterian
elder currently serving on the session of her congregation in Louisville,
she is married to John Lisherness and is the mother of Kara, 20, Peter 17,
and Kate 13.
