Tentmakers Schedule Annual Conference
Presbyterians to Meet Jointly with Episcopalians
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-"Mission and Maintenance: Tentmakers and Mission Beyond the
Sanctuary Walls" is the theme of the annual conference of the Association
of Presbyterian Tentmakers.
The conference will be held Nov. 5-7 in Federal Way, Wash., midway
between Seattle and Tacoma, and is co-sponsored by the National Association
for the Self Supporting Active Ministry (NASSAM) of the Episcopal Church.
Tentmakers are ministers who serve in church-related positions but who
derive all or most of their income from outside employment.
A brochure on the conference states: "This last year of the millennium
we tackle the age-old issue of mission versus maintenance. Most tentmakers
are painfully aware of the tension that can rise in a church over the
issues of resources and ministry. Tentmaking, as a ministry life-style,
directly confronts these challenges to the church."
Keynote speakers are the Rev. Lynn Longfield, executive presbyter for
Olympia Presbytery and a veteran tentmaker, and Phil Aspinall, a Church of
England priest who works as a safety officer in the chemical industry.
Worship leader is the Rev. Jim Lawton, a tentmaking pastor in Rhode
Island.
A new element in this year's conference is an exploration of how
tentmakers can be mutually supportive of each other between annual
conferences. The exploration will be led by the Rev. Bill Dodge, a
tentmaker and retired professor and software engineer from Albany, N.Y.,
and the Rev. Brian Crosby, a member of the Iona Community from Vancouver,
B.C.
More information about the Association of Presbyterian Tentmakers
annual conference is available from the Rev. John Hasenjaeger, tentmaker,
university teacher and conference registrar at 724 Van Buren Street, Oregon
City, OR 97045; fax (503) 650-6659.
