Twenty-eight United Methodist-related colleges have been recognized for
leadership in developing student character by a foundation that promotes
moral and ethical training.

The colleges and universities are among 100 listed in The Templeton Guide:
Colleges that Encourage Character Development, a publication released in
October by the Radnor, Pa.,-based John Templeton Foundation.

"The Templeton Guide identifies colleges that encourage students to
understand the importance of personal and civic responsibility, which will
help them succeed in college and beyond," said Arthur J. Schwartz, director
of character development programs at the foundation.

The book profiles 405 college programs in 10 categories related to inspiring
students to lead ethical and civic-minded lives. The guide also highlights
50 college presidents selected for their leadership in this area and 100
colleges named to the Templeton Honor Roll. To date, more than 350 colleges
and universities have been named to one or more of the honor rolls.

The guidebook was designed for parents, students and counselors who want to
learn more about how schools encourage values such as honesty, service,
respect and responsibility.

The foundation's purpose is to stimulate excellence in scholarly
understanding and to encourage explorations of the moral and spiritual
dimensions. It also encourages academic institutions to incorporate training
that promotes excellence in character.
