MONMOUTH, Ill. - Former President George Bush will deliver the commencement
address to the Monmouth College Class of 2000 this spring, school officials
have announced.

Bush was elected the nation's 41st president on Nov. 8, 1988, serving
until Jan. 20, 1993. During his term freedom prevailed in the Cold War, the
threat of nuclear war was drastically reduced, the Berlin Wall fell, and an
international coalition force liberated Kuwait from Iraq.

"This will be an exciting, historic and special occasion for Monmouth
College and our community," said Monmouth President Richard Giese.

Among the measures Bush signed into law were the Americans with
Disabilities Act and the Clean Air Act. Since he left office, Bush has
visited 54 foreign countries and helped raise millions of dollars for a
variety of charitable organizations.

BATESVILLE, Ark. - Dr. Bruce Johnston, vice president for student life and
dean of students at Lyon College, has been elected to the Board of Trustees
of Presbyterian Children's Services.

Presbyterian Children's Services, based in Waxahachie, Texas, provides
services for young people and families in crisis. The organization is "a
recognized leader in helping children and families become productive,
Christian citizens," Johnston said.

Services offered by the organization include family environments for
dependent children, parent skills training, training other professionals in
dealing with "at-risk" children, therapeutic foster care, consultation for
families, and campus facilities available for group meetings and outings.

Before taking his current posts in 1990, Johnston worked at Hope
College in Holland, Mich., for 13 years.

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - A couple that attended Illinois College has bequeathed
$5.8 million to the school to be used for financial assistance to students.

The gift, from the estate of the late James and Anna Margaret Merrill, of
Santa Barbara, Calif., is the second-largest ever received by the liberal
arts college. In 1991, it received $9 million from the estate of Lew and
Mary Cummings of Chambersburg, Ill.

The Merrills were Jacksonville natives who attended the college.

"We are overjoyed by the generosity and vision of James and Anna Margaret
Merrill," school President Richard A. Pfau said. "By their actions, they
have assured a brighter future for countless numbers of young men and women
who seek the best in what a college education can offer."

The gift was made in the form of cash and real estate.
