KERRVILLE, Texas - Sam McDowell Junkin has been named interim president of
Schreiner College following the recent resignation of Thompson Biggers.
Junkin served as Schreiner's third president from 1971 until 1996, when
he retired. An ordained Presbyterian minister, Junkin presided over
Schreiner's evolution from a junior college and military preparatory school
to a nationally ranked four-year coed liberal-arts college. Schreiner has
been affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) since the college was
established in 1923.
"We are fortunate to be able to call upon Sam Junkin to lead this
institution while we conduct a national search for Schreiner's new
president," said William Key Wilde, chairman of the board of trustees. "He
is a wise man, and a truly gifted leader."

BATESVILLE, Ark. - J. William Moncrief, provost and dean of faculty at Lyon
College, has announced his retirement, effective June 30.
Moncrief, who will have completed 24 years of service as chief academic
officer of three liberal-arts institutions, became Lyon's 20th dean of
faculty and first provost in July 1997.
"During his tenure at Lyon, he led the academic services component with
distinction, and was instrumental in facilitating the creation of new
majors and forging new cooperative agreements with state two-year
institutions," said Walter B. Roettger, Lyon's president. "He is a trusted
and effective advocate for academic interests (and) a dedicated officer of
the college."
Moncrief served as acting president of the college for two months in
1997. He also serves as a professor of chemistry at Lyon, and is retiring
from that position as well.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - During January, 19 Eckerd College students are
mixing academics with service learning in a class called "Social Inequality
in the U.S." that involves a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer work.
The students will work for a shelter for abused wives and families; the
Adolescent Pregnancy and Parenting Program; the St. Petersburg Free Clinic
and Academy Prep, a school for disadvantaged African-American boys. The
students also have read and discussed a text, "New Poverty: Families in
Postmodern Society," by David Cheal, and other materials provided by
sociology professor J. Patrick Henry, who has taught at Eckerd for nearly
20 years.

CLINTON, S.C. - A longtime Presbyterian College administrator has been
named by the board of trustees as the school's vice president for finance
and administration.
Morris M. Galloway had been serving as acting vice president for
finance and administration since May 1. The trustees named him to the post
on a permanent basis during their fall meeting.
A 1979 graduate of Presbyterian College, Galloway returned to his alma
mater in 1981 to teach computer science after earning a master's degree in
computer science at the University of Virginia. He joined the
administration in the mid-1980s and was named dean of administrative
services, an officer-level position, in 1989.
