NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) - The United Methodist Church's Double Your Dollars
for Scholars program is increasing the number of scholarships it offers to
325, with most of the new awards going specifically to racial minorities.
The Nashville-based United Methodist Foundation matches $1,000 for local
churches raising that amount for a member of their congregation who plans to
attend a United Methodist-related college or seminary.
The matching scholarship program, now in its fourth year, began with a goal
of awarding 100 scholarships. The response during the first year was so
successful that the amount was expanded to 220 scholarships in 1998 and
1999.
In 2000, the program will provide $1,000 matching scholarships to the first
325 eligible applicants. The increased number includes 75 scholarships
specifically designated for Hispanic, Asian and Native American students.
These scholarships will be divided equally among the three groups from a
grant provided by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and
Ministry.
"We are pleased to expand this very popular and dynamic program in this
direction for the 2000-2001 academic year," said George Miller, foundation
president and chief executive officer.
The scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, and
candidates must be enrolled or enrolling as full-time students in a United
Methodist-related college, university or seminary. The candidate also must
be an active United Methodist and have been a member of the church for at
least a year. Applications with a postmark of Feb. 1 or after will be
accepted. Any application received before then will be returned to the
sponsoring church for resubmission.
