Theology and Worship Office Receives Lilly Grant
New program will help students with transition
from seminary to first pastorate
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-The Office of Theology and Worship here has received a
$750,000 grant from the Lilly Endowment of Indianapolis for a new program
designed to help students make the transition from seminary to their first
pastorates.
Entitled "Excellence From the Start," the new program is among the
first to be selected for a new Lilly-funded initiative that encourages the
development of programs to support and strengthen new pastors as they enter
parish ministry.
The program will be evaluated by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
Research Services Office to gauge its success.
The grant is the second recent award to Theology and Worship from
Lilly. Earlier, Lilly funded the Congregational Ministries
Division-related office's "Pastor-Theologian Program," which brought
together pastors from across the denomination to reflect theologically on
many of the issues that face contemporary society and the church.
Many alumni of the Pastor-Theologian Program will serve as mentors in
"Excellence from the Start," said associate for theology the Rev. Robert A.
Johnson.
Inquiries about the new program may be directed to Johnson, the program
director, at (502) 569-5310 or by e-mail at <raj@ctr.pcusa.org>.
