Seminarians Can Earn Credit
for Attending General Assembly
San Francisco Theological Seminary program
available to other seminaries
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Earn academic credits for attending General Assembly?
That's the deal under a longstanding program of San Francisco
Theological Seminary (SFTS) that is now available to students at all 10
theological institutions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
The program - now sponsored by the Committee on Theological Education
and the Office of the General Assembly in addition to SFTS - was begun
several years ago by the Rev. Jack Rogers, recently retired SFTS
vice-president. During the last few years, a few students from other
seminaries have gravitated to the for-credit course. Now its going
national.
Running from June 23 - the day before the 212th Assembly convenes in
Long Beach, Calif. - and continuing until the Assembly concludes on July 1,
the program is available for either 1.5 or 3 semester credits.
Each student will monitor the activity of a General Assembly committee
and report its actions to the group; learn in detail about one of the
special interest groups lobbying the Assembly; explore the range of
General Assembly activities displayed in the Assembly's exhibit area;
observe the election of the moderator on June 24 and plenary debates on
critical issues; participate in daily worship and special Assembly events;
and receive briefings from various Assembly officials.
Participants must complete required reading and keep a journal during
their time at the Assembly. Those taking the course for 3 credits will
also have to write a 10-15 page paper.
