NEWS CONFERENCE ADVISORY - 10:30 A.M. MARCH 8, 2000
CHURCH LEADERS TO ASK CONGRESS TO INCREASE MINIMUM WAGE

EDITORS and PRODUCERS: At a news conference set for 10:30 a.m. 
Wednesday, March 8, in Washington, D.C., religious leaders will call 
upon the U.S. Congress to increase the minimum wage by $1/hour over 
the next two years.

The $1 increase would mean an additional $2,000 per year for those 
working people and their families who are most in need of the 
additional income.

Participants at the news conference will include the Rev. Paul H. 
Sherry, Immediate Past President of the United Church of Christ who 
will represent the National Council of Churches; Rev. David 
Beckmann, President of Bread for the World; the Rev. Kathleen S. 
Hurty, Executive Director of Church Women United; the Rt. Rev. 
McKinley Young, Ecumenical Officer of the African Methodist 
Episcopal Church; Rep. David Bonior (D-Mich.); and Sen. Edward 
Kennedy (D-Mass.) (invited), among others.

The news conference will be held at the House Triangle (rain 
alternative: HC-9).
