A National Council of Churches committee, meeting March 19-23 in Charleston,
S.C., will use part of its time there to call attention to the NAACP
sanctions against the state.
At least 16 denominations will send representatives to the committee
meeting, including the United Methodist, African Methodist Episcopal,
African Methodist Episcopal Zion and Christian Methodist Episcopal churches.
The 40-member committee on uniform series develops outlines for Sunday
school resources.
The NAACP has led economic sanctions against South Carolina's tourism
industry in response to the Confederate flag being flown at the state's
capitol. The committee will address the issue during the opening worship
service at 6:30 p.m., March 19, at Greater St. Luke's AME Church. The
service is open to the community.
Committee members will have their March 22 closing banquet at the Zion
Olivet Presbyterian Church and intend to support local minority-owned
businesses whenever possible during the meeting.
