LOUISE CAPEN, RETIRED MISSIONARY TO CHINA
AND SOUTHEST ASIA, DIES
Word has been received of the death of Louise Capen,
retired American Baptist International Ministries missionary
to China and Southeast Asia, on Feb. 24, 2000. She was 86.
Louise Capen and husband, Carl, were married in 1935
and appointed as missionaries later that year by the
American Baptist Foreign Mission Society. They served a
total of 43 years in South China, Thailand, Singapore and
Hong Kong in ministry to the Swatow-speaking Chinese.
During her years in Southeast Asia Louise Capen also
was involved in interdenominational organizations and
activities such as the YWCA, World Day of Prayer and
ministries with college students. She was instrumental in
the 24-hour crisis and suicide prevention service in
Singapore and served on a committee for the building of a
hostel for single working women. She also was editor of
The Thailand Tatler, a monthly mission newsletter.
The Capens retired in 1978 but made return trips to
their former stations. Missionaries for All Seasons: The
Capen Story, written by Mary Louise Munson, details their
mission service. Carl Capen died in 1986.
Condolences can be mailed to her children: Mrs. Keith
Allen, 8911 S. Florence Place, Tulsa, OK 74137; Ms.
Constance Capen, 1910 Oxford St. #210, Berkeley, CA 94704;
