Rupert's Land elects ministry expert as new bishop
Winnipeg
The Diocese of Rupert's Land has elected someone well versed in various
forms of ministry as its new bishop.
Ven. Donald D. Phillips, executive officer of the Diocese of Qu'Appelle,
was elected March 25 on the fourth ballot from a slate of 11 candidates. He
will be consecrated Tuesday, May 23.
He succeeds Bishop Patrick Lee, who retired in November, 1999.
Ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Athabasca in 1981, Bishop-elect
Phillips served in Alberta parishes in Athabasca, Lac La Biche, St. Paul,
Fort Chipewyan and St. Thomas, Fort McMurray, until 1987, when he accepted
an appointment as Incumbent of St. Michael and All Angels, Moose Jaw,
Sask., in the Diocese of Qu'Appelle.
In 1992 he was appointed to the newly-created position of ministries
development co-ordinator in the Diocese of Qu'Appelle, to work with
parishes exploring new forms of local ministry. He has made presentations
at ministry conferences in Canada, the United States and England, served as
chairperson of the Living Stones Diocesan Partnership (North America) from
1996 to 1998, and was the North American presenter at the Edward King
Institute for Ministry Development at the University of Leicester, England.
In 1997, while continuing to oversee diocesan ministry development, he was
appointed executive officer of the Diocese of Qu'Appelle.
Bishop-elect Phillips received his master of divinity degree from London's
Huron College, University of Western Ontario. He also holds a bachelor's
and master's degree in chemistry.
The new bishop is married to Nancy, a registered nurse in private practice.
They have two teenaged sons, David and Peter.
