FAMILY WEEK RESOURCES AVAILABLE FROM THE NCC
May 3, 2000, NEW YORK CITY - "Doing Justice: Strengthening Families for a New Century" is the theme of the new "Family Week" resources just published by the National Council of Churches.
The four-color 11"x17" poster proclaims the theme in English, Spanish and Korean and features appealing candid photographs of National Council of Churches staff members and their families - cheered appreciatively when the poster was unveiled at a recent staff meeting. On the back is a substantial list of suggested resources in the three languages. In addition, different inserts have been prepared in each language, including four bulletin inserts in English and Bible studies in Spanish and Korean.
This undated resource is for use by congregations, ecumenical and community groups, even concerned individuals and families whenever they want to focus on "Families and Justice."
"Family Week" materials are produced by and for members of the NCC's Committee on Family Ministries and Human Sexuality, and have used "Strengthening Families for a New Century" as their overarching theme for the past several years.
"The theme reminds the church that supporting families is an important part of congregational mission," said the Rev. Joe Leonard, staff to the committee. "This year's sub-theme, 'Doing Justice,' explores ways to build a more family-friendly society and encourages families to be involved in justice-making for the larger society."
Many U.S. Protestant churches will celebrate Family Week May 7-14, 2000, ending with Mothers Day. Other churches and community organizations will celebrate Family Week during Thanksgiving Week in November. In Canada, many churches will celebrate Family Week/Festival of the Christian Home Oct. 8-15, 2000, in conjunction with Canadian Thanksgiving on October 9.
Individual "Family Week" kits are available for $1 each from the NCC Committee on Family Ministries and Human Sexuality, Room 848, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10015; phone 212-870-2673; fax 212-870-2030; e-mail jleonard@ncccusa.org.
