INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- A religion communicator active in the leadership of
ecumenical communication organizations has accepted the newly created
position of managing editor of The Disciple, according to editor-in-chief,
Patricia R. Case.

The Rev. Daniel R. Gangler, 53, formerly the associate editor of The
United Methodist Reporter, and director of education and multimedia
publishing at UMR Communications in Dallas, brings more than 16 years of
experience to the denominational magazine.

Past president of the Religion Communicators Council, a 600-member
interfaith association of communicators, Gangler is also past president of
the United Methodist Association of Communicators, who named him
Communicator of the Year in 1996. He holds membership in the Associated
Church Press, an ecumenical organization of Christian periodicals.

Before his work in Dallas with UMR Communications, Gangler served 11
years as director of communications for the Nebraska Conference of The
United Methodist Church and as editor of The Nebraska Messenger, a monthly
conference newspaper. An ordained minister in the United Methodist Church,
he served United Methodist congregations in Nebraska before entering a
communications career.

A native of Peoria, Ill., Gangler holds three educational degrees: a
bachelor of science degree in art education from Illinois State
University, Normal, Ill.; a master of divinity degree in biblical studies
from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill.; and a
doctor of ministry degree in Christian social ethics from the Saint Paul
School of Theology in Kansas City, Mo.

"Dan's experience in educational, pastoral and communication contexts
promises to provide a new depth to the staff of The Disciple," Case said.
"As a United Methodist, he also keeps us honest about our commitments to
ecumenism."

The Disciple, published 10 times a year, is circulated primarily to
members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States
and Canada. Editorial offices are located in Indianapolis. Publisher of
the magazine is Christian Board of Publication in St. Louis, Mo., a
general unit of the Disciples of Christ.
