Walton, Kuykendall receive Higher Education Award
Philanthropist, educator are honored
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Helen Walton, who has invested millions in Presbyterian
higher education ministries, and the Rev. John W. Kuykendall, who spend 40
years in Presbyterian higher education ministry, have been named recipients
of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Higher Education Award for 2000.
Three other Presbyterian educators were named to the denomination's Higher
Education Honor Roll. They are Carl S. Dudley, professor of church and
community at Hartford (Conn.) Seminary; the Rev. Malcolm C. McIver Jr.,
former dean of the faculty at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education
in Richmond, Va.; and Mary Boney Sheats, former teacher of Bible and
religion at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta from 1949 until her retirement in
1983.
Walton, widow of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton, has had a long and
distinguished record of service in the PC(USA). A longtime resident of
Bentonville, Ark., she sponsors the Walton International Scholarship program
at the city's University of the Ozarks, which enrolls 60 students each year
from Central America. She also supports the Hazel Carr Robson Scholarship
Program -- named for her mother -- at the university.
Kuykendall served as president and professor of religion at Davidson (N.C.)
College from 1984-1997. During his tenure the faculty grew from 120 to140
and programs were added in the fields of medical ethics, neuroscience,
gender studies and international studies. Endowment tripled and
scholarships grew exponentially.
