LONG BEACH, June 25 - 183 commissioners and friends of the Presbyterian
Media Mission gathered to hear the annual update of its work.

"Media Literacy" is a new venture by PMM to help church members begin
grasping the use of the media/information age. The CD, "Reflections on the
Media Culture," was furnished to all present. It provides a critical
examination of the media culture with which the local church must contend.

In1996, the Assembly called for an effort to utilize the church’s influence
on the media to strengthen moral values. Partnering with the General
Assembly Council’s Office of Communication two programs have been developed,
"Media Literacy and "Hands On" which engages youth with celebrities and
athletes in faith building, sharing time and interests, and supporting
outreach in the community.

The highlight of the luncheon was the presentation by Charles J. Cappleman,
CBS’s senior vice president of West Coast operations. Cappleman, an active
Methodist layman, was introduced by five time Emmy award winner and active
Presbyterian layman, Michael Rhodes using the words of Paul in Philippians
1:3-5.

Cappleman opened his presentation by saying, "This must be a liberal group
to invite a Methodist to address a Presbyterian group." He legitimatized his
qualifications by affirming that his mother was Presbyterian. Using a series
of audio-visual presentations, Cappleman showed examples of ways the church
can communicate through the media more effectively in this age.

He concluded by observing the media is creating major social change
including isolation. "The church, " he affirmed, "with its vast resources,
is the best agency to deal with these changes."

In response to questions concerning the moral void in media, he replied ,
"There are more Christians in Hollywood than you imagine. There are people
in the media now who are turning down roles. Our numbers are growing."And
his plea was," Don’t condemn us, but pray for us."
