Assembly approves clarifying role of middle governing bodies in educational
partnerships
by Midge Mack
LONG BEACH, June 29 - The entire report of the Assembly Committee on
Educational Institutions was approved by commissioners Wednesday morning.
Overture 00-71 which had been reworded by the committee to allow middle
governing bodies to participate in the development of a new mission strategy
in partnership with schools, colleges and universities was included.
Also included was approval of an addition to recommendations from the
Council on Theological Education, in which the committee had requested the
General Assembly Council to express to the presidents and trustees of
Princeton and the University of Dubuque Theological Seminaries, its concern
for the balance of genders on the two boards. The committee also asked that
the balance be improved and that a report be received on progress in this
area by the committee's successor at the 213th General Assembly (2001).
Approvals included Jeffrey Francis Bullock as president of the University
of Dubuque Theological Seminary. Laura Mendenhall, reported yesterday as
approved to succeed retiring Columbia Theological Seminary president
Douglas Oldenburg, was simply introduced, both to the Assembly Committee
and to the commissioners during the plenary session. Oldenburg was
recognized and honored for his service to Columbia. He said he had been
happily involved in parish ministry when he was asked to allow his name to
be placed as a candidate for the presidency. He agreed, he told
commissioners, because "nothing is more important than the calling and
nurturing of leaders for the church."
Mendenhall also comes to the church from parish ministry and told
commissioners that her congregation had agreed she could take this new call
"only if she go and make pastors who have the same passion for ministry that
she has."
Assembly approval also was voted for the recommendations of the committee
in regard to synod minutes, all approved, most with exceptions or comments,
except for the Synod of the Sun, which did not submit current minutes.
In this case the committee requested that approvals of these minutes be
referred to the 213th General Assembly and that the Synod of the Sun be
required to submit minutes of its future biennial meetings for review not
later than 30 days prior to the convening of the General Assembly
immediately following final adjournment of each biennial meeting.
