	Response to offerings is generous

LONG BEACH, June 29- Presbyterians and others attending the two largest
worship services during the 212th General Assembly gave more than $50,000 in
offerings for designated local and international causes.

	More than $44,000 was given at the opening worship service Sunday,
according to the General Assembly treasurer's office. Moderator of the 211th
Assembly Freda Gardner designated the offering to go to these mission
programs:

	* Central American Evangelical Center for Pastoral Studies, Guatemala
	* Racial Ethnic secondary schools (Presbyterian Pan American School in
Kingsville, Texas, and The Menaul School in Albuquerque, N.M.)
	* H.I.S. House (ministry to homeless), Laurel House (ministry to teenagers
in volatile home situations) and Domestic Abuse Program (ministry to
domestic abuse victims), all of which are located in the Presbytery of Los
Ranchos, the Assembly host presbytery.

	Nearly $6,100 was given to the offering at the ecumenical worship service
Wednesday evening. That offering will go to the HIV/AIDS Control Project
administered by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa, in ecumenical
mission with partner churches and the All Africa Conference of Churches.

	The Rev. Eugene Turner, associate stated clerk for governing body,
ecumenical and agency relations of the General Assembly, told the
worshippers that the project includes training about the disease and its
victims to enable people to minister to Africans in their communities. He
said the offering allowed those who gave money to give "practical
assistance" to an ecumenical ministry.
