Hymns calm commissioners as alarm blares
by Gary Luhr
LONG BEACH, June 30–When a fire alarm disrupted the 212th General Assembly
Friday for the third time in three days, Moderator Syngman Rhee responded to
the situation with song.
As the alarm wailed, Rhee led commissioners, most of whom remained in the
Assembly hall, in one chorus each of "Amazing Grace" and "Spirit of the
Living God."
The alarm went off Friday afternoon as commissioners considered when they
would take up an overture dealing with the emotional issue of same sex
unions. On the previous days, the alarm sounded as they debated proposals
pertaining to the production of sexuality resources and funding for the
National and World councils of churches.
As commissioners finished singing the second hymn, the alarm stopped and
business was resumed. One of the previous interruptions was attributed to a
smoke alarm inside the Long Beach Convention Center.
