Assembly votes to take up same sex unions at end of agenda

	Report docketed for Friday evening

	by Jerry L. Van Marter

LONG BEACH, June 30–The 212th General Assembly voted Friday afternoon to
deal with a proposal to ban same sex unions in the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) as one of its last items of business.

The report of the Assembly Committee on Physical and Spiritual Well Being
will be taken up after dinner on Friday evening. The committee is
suggesting that a proposed amendment to the church's "Book of Order" be sent
to its presbyteries for ratification that would flatly prohibit same sex
union ceremonies in the PC(USA).

The Physical and Spiritual Well Being report is the last report docketed
for Friday. The only business scheduled for Saturday is the approval of
budgets. The Assembly will adjourn at Noon Saturday.

The docket was proposed by the Assembly Committee on Bills and Overtures.
A motion from the floor to move the same sex union debate to Friday
afternoon was easily defeated.
