LONG BEACH, July 1- The 212th General Assembly, in its final business
session, approved a 2001 mission budget of $144,199,253. The budget passed,
378-4.

The 2001 budget – to be balanced – will require reductions in existing
programs of $161,478. It was explained to the Assembly that though this
sounds like a large amount, it represents only one-tenth of 1 percent of the
total budget.

The budget action instructed the General Assembly Council to reduce
programs, absorb where possible in existing budgets and reallocate resources
as needed. If available, any surplus from the 2000 budget will be used to
fund the approved mission actions.

The financial implications of Assembly actions accounted for all but
$100,000 of the mission budget increase. The committee took action to take
$100,000 from reserves for church development, and in particular, racial
ethnic church development.

The 2001 mission budget represents an increase of $331, 437 over the 2000
budget. Other Assembly actions during the week resulted in increases to the
remaining 2000 mission budget in the amount of $54,066.

The Assembly also approved a three-cent increase in the General Assembly
per capita to $4.98.
