TRIBETT RESIGNS FROM EDUCATIONAL MINISTRIES STAFF
by Eleanor Lundy, American Baptist Educational Ministries
Brenda D. Tribett has announced her resignation from
American Baptist Educational Ministries' program staff
effective Sept. 29, 2000. Tribett, a partner in
Discipleship Ministries with leadership responsibilities in
Black Church Education, Children's Ministries and Community
Ministries, will return to the position of executive
director of Christian Education for the Progressive National
Baptist Convention in Washington, D.C., a post she held
prior to joining Educational Ministries in September 1995.
A major focus of Tribett's ministry has been
empowering the discipleship ministries of Black churches.
She directed the recent National Black Church Education
Conference, "Behold the Vision," in Cleveland in July. She
led another successful Black Church Education Conference,
"Risking a New Thing," in Richmond in the summer of 1998,
and gave leadership during the multicultural "Fiesta of
Ministry" conference at Green Lake, Wis., in 1996. She was
a staff team member in the ecumenical Black Family Ministry
project, which includes an Effective Black Parenting series
in which consultants are equipped to work with local
churches to strengthen Black families. She also developed
printed resources and designed training events and workshops
to strengthen discipleship ministries and edited the
quarterly "Forum" newsletter for Black churches.
Among Tribett's important initiatives in the area of
advocacy for children were a national project to gather
school supplies for homeless children and participation in
the first national Stand For Children event in Washington,
D.C., in June 1996. In August 1999 she also led a
Children's Ministry Consultation at Valley Forge, Pa.
Through her efforts Children's Sabbath and Family Week
resources have been made available each year to American
Baptist constituencies. In addition she facilitated a
teleconference on gun violence in May 1999.
Tribett has represented Educational Ministries with
ecumenical partners including the National Council of
Churches of Christ, the Children's Defense Fund, Tobacco-
Free Kids, curriculum development groups and a number of
other groups advocating for children, families and Black
congregations.
"Brenda Tribett has made an important contribution to
the educational ministry of American Baptist Churches," said
the Rev. Jeffrey D. Jones, team leader for Educational
Ministries' Partners in Discipleship Ministries. "Her
leadership has enhanced the reputation of the Black Church
Education Conference as a quality event that both inspires
and teaches. Her concern for children in society has opened
new doors for involvement that affirm the important role
this ministry plays in enabling our growth as disciples of
Jesus Christ. We thank her for her ministry with us and
wish her well in her new position."
