UPDATE: October 6, 2000
CHAPMAN TO RETIRE AS PRESIDENT
OF NORTHERN BAPTIST SEMINARY
The Rev. Dr. Ian Chapman, who has served for the past
12 years as president of American Baptist-related Northern
Baptist Theological Seminary in Lombard, Ill., has announced
plans to retire June 30, 2001.
Chapman will continue to work with the seminary at
retirement when he assumes the position of chancellor.
Under Chapman's leadership the school, one of 10
seminaries related to American Baptist Churches USA through
Educational Ministries, witnessed a doubling of its student
body, increased financial assets and the successful
completion of the $19-million capital campaign "New Seminary
for a New Century" that is providing for new buildings,
scholarships, endowments and programs.
Chapman previously served in several pastorates,
including nine years at Third Baptist Church in St. Louis
and ten years at Morgan Park Baptist Church in Chicago. He
also served on the American Baptist Churches USA General
Board and Board of International Ministries.
Northern's Board of Trustees chair, Patricia Kern,
praised Chapman's "evangelical leadership," noting that he
"played a key role in shaping the vision and goals of the
seminary."
A search committee has been charged with identifying a
candidate to succeed Chapman.
