Moderator undertakes Middle East peace mission
Rhee visits Lebanon, Iraq and Jerusalem
by Alexa Smith
"I still believe there will be peace ... certainly the beginning steps for
a more lasting peace," is what the Rev. Syngman Rhee told religious leaders
in Beiruit, Lebanon, recently during his moderatorial visit to the Middle
East.
Rhee was accompanied on his mission by the Rev. Victor Makari, coordinator
for the Middle East in the Worldwide Ministries Division, and the Rev. Will
Browne, associate for ecumenical partnerships.
Rhee's visit to Lebanon was somewhat of a homecoming, since he was the
PC(USA)'s liaison to the Middle East from 1973-80, when Lebanon was torn by
war. During this visit he was honored at a dinner hosted by Lebanese
interfaith religious leaders. After leaving Lebanon, the three visited Iraq
under the auspices of the Middle East Council of Churches and Church World
Service, the relief arm of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the
U.S.A.
The group concluded its mission with a visit to Jerusalem to, as Makari
said, "show solidarity" with the people who are struggling with peace issues
there.
