Health Ministries Office to sponsor conference on eating disorders
September 2001 seminar slated at Stony Point
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The Office of Health Ministries, U.S.A. in the National
Ministries Division here has scheduled a seminar on eating disorders Sept.
27-29, 2001, at the Stony Point Conference Center.
The seminar aims to increase the awareness, knowledge, and availability of
resources on eating disorders. It is designed for pastoral counselors,
church staff, Christian educators, campus and hospital chaplains, youth
ministers, seminary representatives, and congregational health leaders.
Approached from a Reformed theological perspective, the seminar will
address such questions as:
* How do eating disorders begin?
* What are the negative and positive spiritual practices that can reinforce
or eliminate them?
* What are some of the biblical and medical perspectives on a healthy body
image?
* How can the church respond when one of its members is struggling with an
eating disorder?
Mary Louise Bringle, formerly of St. Andrew Presbyterian College, current
chair of the Humanities Division at Brevard College, and author of The God
of Thinness: Gluttony and Other Weighty Matters, will be the plenary
speaker.
More information on this eating disorders seminar is available by
