Missions NOW celebrates ‘truly global community’
ELKHART, Ind. (MBM) – History was made July 12-16, 2000, when
Mennonites and Anabaptists from 60 communions and 45 countries
met in Guatemala City.
“We celebrated how 100 years of mission have transformed the
Mennonite movement from its North Atlantic ethnic heritage into a
truly global community,” writes MBM President Stanley W. Green in
the opening message of the current issue of Missions NOW.
Participants at the convention met together to pray and discern
how this global Mennonite family can best work together to bring
the good news of the gospel to people in every nation.
The historic event forms the central theme of the Fall 2000 issue
of Missions NOW, which reports on activities at the consultation,
as well as on encouraging stories many of the participants
brought with them about God’s work in the world. In Mongolia,
where the Christian population has grown from five known
believers in 1991 to as many as 25,000 people who call themselves
Christians, some 10,000 believers have received baptism.
Also featured is Raymond Affouka Eba, founder of the Protestant
Anabaptist Church of Ivory Coast, which began in 1994 with 200
members. Today, there are nine congregations with 1,600 members,
as well as 13 village churches and seven prayer groups.
Missions NOW, a full-color magazine with a circulation of more
than 60,000, is produced by MBM’s communications staff. For a
